Health and Wellness Weekly Guidelines

The following guidelines were previously established by the MPTC and are still in effect today. All academies are expected to stay within the following duration guidelines, including endurance runs. Instructors should vary the type of cardio workout (high intensity circuit training, aerobics, running, power walking, biking, obstacle courses, sport activity, etc.) and resistance training exercises (low intensity circuit training, strength training, medicine balls, abdominal workouts, etc.) to minimize fatigue and, subsequently, injuries.
Every physical fitness session shall begin with a proper warm-up stretching routine and end with a cool down stretching routine. Warm-up and cool down time is NOT included in the allotted time for cardio and resistance training.
When conducting physical training, fitness instructors must assist student officers in monitoring their self-perceived level of exertion, along with their target hear rate, utilizing one version of the Borg Scale of Perceived Exertion. On a scale of 1-10, exertion level should be between 2 and five during the course of PT. Student officers should be instructed to notify instructors if their exertion level exceeds the recommended limit and must be allowed to make the necessary adjustments.

Please note that Academy Directors and Physical Fitness Instructors are responsible for ensuring compliance with these guidelines.
